Although we do see it at its best-dressed in top Titanium trim, where a set of coordinated details give the design some 'pop.     Ford Focus facelift review: 'Still the leader of the pack'

    Please refresh the page and retry. I t's 88 years since Converse's orchestral work, Flivver Ten Million , was first performed. It's actually pretty good. Ford, which back then appropriated the term Flivver for its inexpensive automobiles, doesn't make a lot of Converse's music these days, but could have easily have played this piece at the launch of the latest version of the Focus last week.

    Since its launch in this family hatchback has reached a production total of 12 million over three generations. At sweet 16, the Focus is a world car in almost every aspect, built in eight plants, sold in countries with 6.

    Depending on who's counting, this is either a facelifted Mk3 or the Mk4 Focus. We'll go with the former. The tailgate and bonnet are simpler pressings, while the grille and front and rear lower panels are cleaner, with far fewer vents. The dashboard is smoother, made of better materials, with fewer confusing buttons partly thanks to the introduction of Ford's Sync2 voice-activated control system.

    T he seats are trimmed in better man-made upholstery and the centre console has been subject to advanced beverage storage engineering that some folk might dismiss as mere cupholders.

    On the chassis there's a bit of strengthening to make the car stiffer, a set of new dampers with more advanced valves and changes to the suspension bushes to reduce unwanted wheel movement under load. There are also two new engines, a diesel and a petrol, both turbocharged and displacing 1. O ther than that it's the same old Focus, same kerb weights, same interior space, same slightly-too-small boot. It isn't, because this is a mass-market car selling to canny fleet managers and the public alike.

    So there are hatchbacks, saloons and estates, in six trim levels with a choice of six engines all with at least two power outputs and five- and six-speed gearboxes plus a semi-automatic.

    What you probably need to know is that the vast majority of sales will be of the existing 1. Confusingly, the old 1. F ord didn't have a 1. This will occupy just 1. It's a nice engine, though, redolent of Essex motors of yore with a strong mid-range lb ft of torque , an infectiously throaty induction roar and good on-paper figures of Drive it hard and you can just about double the official consumption. Too right it is; 16 years ago the Focus stunned the world with its agility and sheer driver appeal and subsequent models have kept that torch brightly lit.

    F irst impressions are that the new Focus feels as though the ride height has been raised by half an inch. It hasn't, but the body moves around more over bumps, the wheels seem to have more travel and the whole car feels more lively. Comfort is undoubtedly better, especially over small nibbly bumps that in the previous car would feed their way into the car as vibration, but the handling has lost a smidgeon of its precision in the process. The steering doesn't feel quite as scrupulously accurate and the body control, while still good, doesn't quite have that tied-down quality as before.

    T hat said, the linearity and progression of the major controls even the front disc, rear drum brakes and the set and placement of the switches is an object lesson to most and there's a calmness about the interior design compared with the outgoing model that compares well with rivals such as the Golf or Peugeot and makes others such as Audi's A3 look a trifle blingy.
