  • I am looking at buying a Ford Courier GL Crew Cab TD for work. one, but I've just been reading about gearbox problems with them.

    My uncle has a dual cab 4x4 ford courier that has k genuine KM's and it has been serviced every 5k by a ford dealer and monday last week it snapped the crankshaft whilst driving down the street in town. This ute has never seen offroad or hard work.

    He was told this is a common problem. A family friend has had to replace 2 gearboxes in his model. Grew up with Fords as they were the 'family' favorite, but the Courier has always struck me as an underperforming weak as piss POS. Getting to say i told you so is fun, but wears thin after a while.: My 03 TD 5spd 4wd did the head Cracked-known problem by Ford k-just out of warranty.

    Strong as an ox and totally unbreakable, and I worked it a lot harder than most utes would ever tolerate. I would sometimes have 2 ton of firewood on it.

    It's probably the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's a commercial work vehicle, not a racing car! IIRC, problems only really started when the fuel injected 2. Yes, it was the 2. Not a race machine but a fantastic work vehicle. But I agree, if they increased power output they should have upgraded the transmission also. BUT, there was no need to increase power output in the first place! As a commercial work vehicle, the 2. No problems driving it around as a normal car, ie wasn't left standing at the lights by other cars even fully loaded , and as a working ute it stood up to a LOT more work and overloading than most other utes could.

    What more could you want from a ute? If you want to drive something fast get a Veyron!: The Mazda's of the same era have the same problems if worked in top gear too much. Usually there is no problem with warranty though.

    Got a PE Turbo Diesel, been excellent so far touch wood. Have been warned about towing in 5th but have heard that for a lot of vehicles. Only prob I had was some leaking of transmission fluids between different areas the brother checked it because he had worked in ford dealership when they came out and knew about it. Ford had since come out with a redesigned transfer case seals etc. Its been the perfect vehicle for us, dual cab, towing, plenty of room for camping etc. My 05 model cracked the head at under warranty then again at Westrac use them and one blokes had 4heads and five gearboxes in k's.

    They are pieces of shit. Sounds to me like they should go back to the old design, totally bombproof! Rangers use a ford exploder gearbox: Mazda offer a 10 year driveline warranty but ford do not??? Cant believe you would still drive it with a hole in the cases. Would ya ride ya bike in the same state?????

    My 03 bravo 4x4 same as courier has almost ,kms on it and no problems yet, besides general maintenance items. Friend of mine had a ford escape she said she would never own another ford, she now has a rav4. Thats why i put a non genuine replacement head on mine.
