Tue Feb 12, I put a piece of carpet underlay on the hinge side of the door, between the door and frame where it gets pinched holding the door slightly open, but allowing normal door closing if required. I mean something exactly like this , and pro tip, to keep it from coming off or moving, do NOT put it on the door on the side as in the picture, put it on TOP of the door. I was so happy to find this product.

I sleep in the master bedroom in my house, and both of my cats like to sleep in there as well. While I don't have trust issues with anyone I live with, I do want the door to stay mostly closed both to keep the heat in and so that nobody who just casually walks past my room at the wrong moment will catch a glimpse of me in my undies If the door is only open inches there's nothing to see.

Currently the best I have come up with is putting some socks on the floor to make it so the door has a place where it stops closing, but that if needed I can scoot out of the way or just close the door over it. However, the sock keeps moving around and isn't really reliable. So does anyone know of something that is either designed to do this or does it by accident? Any way to make it so the rest position of the door is neither all the way open nor all the way closed, but lets the door still open or close all the way without needing to constantly be fiddling with things like doorstops, etc.

If you put the door stop in the gap so the door couldn't close, instead of under the door holding it in place, you cat would be able to get in and out fine. They're good with doors that are slightly ajar. Look children's finger guards for doors. They look like Mickey Mouse.

We use one for that exact purpose. A brick on the floor to keep the gap open; cat steps over it, and you hopefully swing the door open and step around. I just take a washcloth, fold it up, and slide it under the door.

It grabs against the carpet and does the job. How about an old shoe - something that you can kick out of the way easily enough if you want to close the door. Aside from all of the obvious solutions I was wondering about this: I have seen spring loaded door closers that replace a hinge pin. Here is one for example: The idea would be that the spring would be balanced so that if you opened the door it would return to the ajar position, but not fully closed.

Closing the door would be easy enough, but as soon as you released the latch it would resume the desired 'ajar' position. I also want to add that it is very nice of the cats to let you sleep in their 'master' bedroom. If only they made something that cold stop a door! I mean something exactly like this , and pro tip, to keep it from coming off or moving, do NOT put it on the door on the side as in the picture, put it on TOP of the door.

I was so happy to find this product. And by putting it on top, you can control how far the door will actually close. You could put a cat door in it! I plan on putting one in to the basement door once we finish the basement. It works great and most have swinging doors so you can keep the heat in and still have privacy.

Was just looking for something else, and stumbled across this Latch-n-Vent product. I just ordered two of those. I really, really need one for the laundry room I've been using a leaning baby-gate to keep one of the dogs out of there because that's where the catbox is The other one will be for the bedroom, for the same reason the OP mentions.

Best way to keep a door just barely open cat width but still swings normally? Easily the best thing for this - you won't trip over any objects lying around.
